Kindergarten Homework Policy

PURPOSE
Daily homework reinforces skills and concepts taught at school.  It teaches accountability and responsibility.  Homework also allows the parent to see what skills are currently being taught.

LENGTH
In kindergarten, homework should take approximately 10 minutes per night (given that the child is focused, stays on task, and understands the concepts assigned).  This 10 minute homework period includes 10 minutes reading a book of choice (read to self, read with parent, and/or parent reads with child.)

DURATION
Homework is sent home Monday through Friday in a homework folder and is due the next day. Place the folder in the correct colored tub each morning.

HOMEWORK HELP TIPS

Does your child have a special work area for completing homework? Be sure to have your child complete his or her homework in a quiet, well-organized spot. Keep all homework materials in this area for easy access. Materials should include: sharpened pencils with good erasers,  wide-ruled notebook paper, and their current chapter book. Homework should not be completed in the car or in front of the TV.  Establishing good work habits early on is necessary for future success! For the majority of students, homework assignments are at their independent level.

Some helpful strategies:
1) Eat a quick snack before starting
2) Take a quick break when they get home.
5) Complete daily reading last or before bedtime.
6) Place homework back in the folder before leaving the homework area.
